Vion announced last Monday that it would lower the pig price by 9 cents to €1,56 per kilo. However, the meat group will come back on that decision today (Thursday).
With retroactive effect, Vion has decided not to lower the pig price by 9 cents, but by 5 cents this week. This brings the quotation for week 20 to €1,60 per kilo, including VAT.
With that decision, Vion appears to be responding to the German pig price (VEZG) which – quite unexpectedly – remained unchanged yesterday at €1,60. The other Dutch slaughterhouses, such as Compaxo and Van Rooi, also reduced more moderately than expected.
Sow price published later
Vion's slaughter sow price, which is normally published on Wednesday, is not yet known on Thursday morning. Since Tönnies has lowered the quotation by no less than 20 cents this week to €0,75 per kilo, it is likely that Vion will also make a significant correction. The listing will be announced later this morning, according to the spokesperson for the meat group.
Last week, Vion also corrected the piglet price with retroactive effect. The cut of €8,50 announced on Monday was then tightened to minus €10 on Wednesday. Also this week, Vion is cutting the piglet price by reducing it by €7,50 to €43 per piglet.
The messy way of listing at Vion can be seen in the light of the uncertain and nervous market situation, as a result of the corona crisis.
