The Vion slaughter location in Groenlo, Gelderland, will close with immediate effect. This is because 45 of the 212 examined staff members have tested positive for the corona virus, according to research by the GGD.
The closure is a consequence of the precautionary measures taken by employees of the NVWA to suspend their work. And without supervisors, there is no sex. The GGD has indicated that the other 388 employees and the NVWA employees involved will be tested in the short term.
With the closure of the Vion location in Groenlo, the first slaughterhouse in the Netherlands will be closed. In Germany, several slaughterhouses have already been forced to close their doors. At the beginning of May, Vion also had a corona infection at the location in Scherpenzeel, but the slaughtering process did not have to be stopped for that. Yesterday, the Central Organization for the Meat Sector (COV) told Boerenbusiness indicated that a closure of a slaughter location in the Netherlands was not an issue, but that statement has been overtaken by developments.
Alongside Boxtel and Apeldoorn, Groenlo is one of Vion's larger locations. Organic pigs are slaughtered here by sister company De Groene Weg.
