The Vion slaughterhouse in Groenlo is not only closing its doors, it has now also been decided that all 600 employees of the slaughterhouse will go into home quarantine. With this, Vion hopes to prevent the virus from spreading even further among staff or residents in the region.
The Vion location is the first slaughterhouse in the Netherlands that has to close its doors due to a corona outbreak among the staff. The slaughterhouse in Groenlo is one of the larger locations, where, among other things, organic pigs are slaughtered for sister company De Groene Weg. Vion reports that meat production will continue as usual, but will be temporarily moved to other locations in the Netherlands.
Measures
According to Ronald Lotgerink, CEO of Vion Food Group, the significant number of infections among staff members was unexpected. The company has, in its own words, taken all necessary measures to prevent contamination. Nevertheless, it was announced last Wednesday that 45 of the 600 employees had tested positive for the corona virus. Because NVWA employees stopped working as a precaution, the slaughterhouse was forced to close its doors.
Vion reports that they work closely with, among others, the Security Region, GGD, RIVM, NVWA and Inspectorate SZW to monitor the situation. During this period, they maintain intensive contact with the employees.
