Pig genetics company Topigs Norsvin has had a successful year. The company achieved a historically high result, according to the annual meeting of the cooperative that took place this year as an online event due to the corona virus.
2019 was a successful year for the cooperative. Earlier it was announced that Topigs Norsvin a strong turnover growth managed to achieve. Turnover increased by 21% to €165 million. Worldwide sales of semen increased by 14% and sales of breeding animals even increased by 33%. The growth in the company's royalty income was 19%.
Mark Tijssen, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Topigs Norsvin, is very proud of the company's results and developments and says that the organization is ready for the future.
Named assets
The operating result reached an amount of more than €11 million, reaching the highest level ever. Of this, €5,1 million is profit for the cooperative, 30% of which is registered in terms of capital, which amounts to about €1,5 million. This brings the assets in the name of the members to €6 million.
Mark Tijssen thinks that capital by name is very important: “That means that part of Topigs Norsvin ultimately belongs to me and to the fellow members of the cooperative. That is of course a great position, the company is in the hands of pig farmers and that also means that we as pig farmers have some control over what the company will do in the future.”
Future ambitions
Regarding the company's future ambitions, Villaume Kal, the CEO who has been employed since March, says that the priority is to innovate and continue to meet customer needs. “Ultimately, with the next generation of technologies, we want to ensure that our customers continue to appreciate those propositions and innovation and continue to buy with the support and service we provide locally.”
“Internally, we will have to strengthen the foundation for further growth. Our market share is growing quite fast and that means that we have to make a number of adjustments to be able to accelerate that in the long term.”
According to the new CEO, the corona crisis has little impact on the company. “Fortunately, we don't see a drop in demand, that's not the case. That gives us every confidence for the future.” According to Kal, the opportunities for improvement and opportunities are there for the taking and that they are very large and numerous.
Nitrogen reduction
Toppigs Norsvin also contributes to the reduction of nitrogen emissions from pig farming. The cooperative ensures less nitrogen emissions by improving nitrogen efficiency.
With modern technology and high-quality knowledge, the company can breed pigs with a higher nitrogen efficiency. In 5 years this would result in a reduction in emissions of 3,5% points. This would result in about 4.000 tons less nitrogen emissions among 6 million Dutch finishing pigs.
