Schouten in discussion with sector about slaughter rate

1 July 2020 - Wouter Baan - 2 comments

Minister of Agriculture Carola Schouten will enter into discussions with sector organizations of pig and poultry slaughterhouses about reducing the production speed in slaughterhouses.

With this, Schouten responds to the adopted motion D66 MP Tjeerd de Groot that the slaughter speed must be reduced to prevent the spread of the corona virus. The Products Organization for Pig Farming (POV) has already indicated that lowering the production speed is pointless for humans and animals. The position of the Central Organization for the Meat Sector (COV) is that lowering the slaughter rate should not be an end in itself.

Legal basis
The motion also passed by Member of Parliament Esther Ouwehand (Party for the Animals) to order slaughterhouses to reduce production speed went even further. The government will examine whether it can be implemented on the basis of a legal basis. In her answers, Schouten further emphasizes in January have already indicated that slaughterhouses run too fast, as a result of which the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) would not be able to monitor properly.

When I look at how Schouten conducts consultations with sectors, this will also turn into serious consultation without listening even a bit.
No confidence in it!
