European pork production did not suffer much from the corona crisis in March. Pork production was higher than last year's production.
The restrictions related to the corona crisis, which were imposed during March, did not directly affect European pork production in March. In total, approximately 2 million tons of pork were produced in that month. Compared to the same period last year, this is an increase of 3,3%.
Rising European production is largely dependent on an increase in Spanish pork production, which increased by no less than 12,7%. Dutch production increased by 6,1% and production in Germany was also higher by 3,9%. In France and Poland a plus of 1,4% and 1,3% was achieved.
Record prediction
Pork production, which at the beginning of this year was still lower than last year, is recovering somewhat with this increase. At the beginning of March, it was predicted that European pork production would increase this year would break a new record. However, this expectation was expressed before the corona crisis broke out. The current situation with the closure of Tönnies and an export ban for a number of slaughterhouses to China is throwing a spanner in the works.
