Brussels to promote pork chops in Southern Europe

14 July 2020 - Chanti Oussoren - 2 comments

The European Commission has launched a new campaign 'Let's talk about pork from Europe' to promote the consumption of European pork in the Mediterranean countries.

In total, approximately €7,5 million will be released. The campaign will start in Portugal, Spain and France. The choice for these countries is based on the importance that pork has in the local economy and in the Mediterranean diet. The campaign will run for 3 years and will be shown on various media channels, such as television and social media.

Defusing Myths
The campaign is mainly aimed at young people up to the age of 30 and aims to encourage them to eat pork. To achieve this, those responsible for the initiative want to demystify some of the most common myths about pork.

Pork has been the target of false negatives in recent years that negatively impact pig production in terms of the environment, food safety and animal welfare. "This has led the public, especially the young, to replace pork consumption with other foods due to this misinformation," the campaign said.

Portugal
The investment for the Portuguese market is estimated at €1,4 million. The Portuguese inhabitant consumes on average about 44 kilos of pork per year. The Portuguese pig sector has a total annual turnover of more than one billion and more than 50.000 employees are employed.
