China is not yet done with cutting meat suppliers. Meanwhile, 8 Argentine slaughterhouses have also been added to the banned import list and they are temporarily not allowed to export meat to China.
Earlier, several European and Brazilian meat companies were banned from exporting meat to China. Including 3 large Dutch slaughterhouses, Vion (Boxtel and Groenlo) and Van Rooi and Westfort (Gorinchem).
The underlying reason for this is that the slaughterhouses are struggling with large-scale numbers of corona infections among the staff. China therefore does not want to import meat from such factories, in order to prevent the introduction of the corona virus.
Important sales market
Argentine beef slaughterhouses are now also struggling with the export ban. The South American country is a very important supplier of beef to the Chinese market. Last year, more than 70% of the beef exported went to China. This year, a total of 328.170 tons of beef were exported between January and May, three quarters of which went to China.
According to Miquel Schiaritti, head of Argentina's CICCRA meat sector, the suspension would have no material effect and the duration of the suspension would be 10 days in the worst case. Whether that will actually be the case remains to be seen. Dutch slaughterhouses still have no green light, despite efforts by the Ministry of Agriculture.Â
