The Russian pig sector has grown considerably in recent months. Over the first few months of the year, pig production is no less than 11,6% higher than last year. The pig price also recovered somewhat in 2020 after it had to pay for it at the end of 2019.
For the period from January to May this year, pig production by weight was approximately 1,9 million tonnes. This is an increase of 201.300 tonnes compared to the same period last year. The growth is largely attributed to the modernization of breeding and increased veterinary supervision.
Import and export
In the past 5 years, the Russian pig sector has more than doubled. In 2019, the country achieved a self-sufficiency rate of 103%. The country aims to reduce import volumes and increase its exports abroad and possibly enter new markets.
Russia is once again making itself more self-sufficient this year. In the period from January to May, imports fell by as much as 94% and amounted to only 350.000 tons. At the same time, Russian pork exports are increasing annually. Forecasts from the Russian Ministry of Agriculture see production volume increasing by at least 2025 tons in 760.000. Russian pork exports could increase to 2024 tons by 360.000.
Pig price
The Russian pork price suffered at the end of 2019. The pig price entered the new year at a constant price of €1,18 per kilo. Since then the price has fluctuated considerably with peaks and valleys. In the week of May 13, the pig price reached the lowest level in 1,09 years at €4. Since then, the price has recovered somewhat and was trading at €1,35 per kilo at the beginning of June. The price then fell back a bit, but has since recovered and was trading at €1,45 in mid-July.
The pig price in Russia has reached the highest level since August 2019. However, when the current price is compared with the same period last year, the level is still considerably lower. Last year the pig price was €1,71 in mid-July
