First Danish slaughterhouse hit by corona

30 July 2020 - Jorine Cosse

The corona virus has been diagnosed in a slaughterhouse of the Danish meat processor Danish Crown. Within 48 hours, 3 employees tested positive. Until now, Scandinavian slaughterhouses seemed to escape the corona problem.

The processor has immediately closed the department with the infected employees. About 30 employees were sent home with this. The infections came to light after an employee reported to the management last Sunday (July 26) that he was infected with the virus. The other 2 infected employees were found through tests carried out by Danish Crown on Monday. It is unknown how the employees could be infected and whether more employees are infected.

The meat processor is in talks with the authorities to see what further measures should be taken to prevent more infections. As far as is known, this is the first slaughterhouse in Scandinavia to be affected by a corona infection among employees, unlike, for example, Germany, Ireland and The Netherlands where several slaughterhouses had to deal with the problem.

Denmark and corona
The affected Danish Crown site is just under 70 kilometers from Copenhagen, in Ringsted. In total there are about 900 employees. The number of infections in the country has been rising since last Monday. In total, 30 infections were added in 1 day, which means that 13.577 infections have now been confirmed in Denmark. The death toll remains at 613.
