The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has revised its forecast for global meat production. The ministry predicts an increase in global pork production, and China is also expected to import more meat this year.
The USDA has revised up its 2020 global pork production forecast by 2% to 96 million tons. The increase mainly comes from higher meat production in China, as the country begins a recovery of its pig herd following culls due to African swine fever (ASF).
The United States has not contributed to the global increase. The expected production of pork there is adjusted downwards by 2% to 13 million tons. It is also expected that production in Brazil will also be 2% lower. These expected decreases are based on the outbreak of the coronavirus and the adverse consequences for the pig sector
Pork trade
Chinese demand for pork remains high despite trade disruptions caused by the corona crisis. The domestic pig population there is not yet the same and the demand for pork remains high. The forecast for Chinese pork imports is increased to 4,4 million tonnes, from previously forecast imports of 3,9 million tonnes.
beef production
In contrast to pork production, beef and chicken production is expected to be lower. The expected beef production is adjusted downwards by 1% and the production of chicken meat is adjusted downwards at least to 100 million tons.
