The tropical grid hinders the throughput on the piglet market. The supply of piglets was already large before the heat wave and is now...
Driving to further export destinations such as Poland and Spain is not an option due to the high temperatures. This means that a number of sales channels will disappear. This saves several tens of thousands of piglets per week.
Domestic demand has fallen
The demand for new couples has also fallen in the Netherlands and Germany due to the summer heat. This is due to growth retardation in fattening pigs and reduced slaughter capacity. The supply of piglets is therefore increasing. Logistics can often still be managed within the fixed connections, but there is virtually no demand for free piglets. Especially because the supply was already ample in the weeks before when Tönnies had to close for a few weeks due to corona infections.
Stable prices
Despite the pressure, we see stable price movements in Germany. The VEZG quotation there remains unchanged at €39 per piglet. And although traders in the Netherlands indicate that sales are difficult, they have not opted for a reduction in the DCA BestPigletPrice, which remains at €30 per piglet. Everything remains the same on the pig market, as expected. Vion keeps the quotation unchanged at €1,47 per kilo.
