Tönnies is allowed to export to China again

14 August 2020 - Wouter Baan

The German meat processor Tönnies can again export pork to China. Since mid June sales were halted due to a corona outbreak among slaughterhouse staff. The number of slaughters is also returning to the old level.

The top of the meat company has announced in the German media that meat can be exported to China again from the various slaughter locations. The problems regarding corona are under control.

The fact that shipping to China can be resumed is a positive step for the development of European pig prices. Sales to China are usually lucrative and, moreover, necessary for the square value of the carcass.

Slaughter is ramping up
Tönnies also reports that the number of slaughters is steadily rising again. Meanwhile, 17.000 pigs are slaughtered on a daily basis at the main location. Before the corona outbreak, this number was approximately 20.000 to 25.000. This is a positive development for the oversupply of fattening pigs in Northwest Europe.

Netherlands not yet
When asked, the Central Organization for the Meat Sector says that the export ban that Vion and Van Rooi are facing has not yet been lifted. However, director of International Affairs Frans van Dongen recently announced that there are signs that the Chinese ban may be in place 'several weeks' would be resolved.
