The United Kingdom produced more pork in July than last year. The country has also reached the highest production in July in the past 20 years.
This is according to the latest figures from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the British Department of Agriculture. In total, the country produced 86.200 tons of pork in July. Compared to the same period last year, this is an increase of 9% and the highest slaughter figure for July of the last 20 years. The number of slaughtered fattening pigs increased by 6% to 963.700. The number of sows and boars slaughtered grew by 21% and increased to 23.200 head.
According to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (ADHB), the increase may have come from increased demand for foodservice products in July, such as barbecued meats.
First half year
Over the first 6 months of the year, total UK pork production was 561.200 tonnes. Compared to the same period last year, this is an increase of 4%. The number of slaughtered finishers this year amounted to 6,3 million heads, which is 2% higher than last year. The slaughter of adult pigs that were first used for breeding (sows and boars) amounted to 141.200 head, which is 1% lower than last year.
