The German pig population turns out to be larger than originally reported. The historical contraction turned out to be less than had been anticipated, after which the German statistical service Destatis adjusted the figures upwards.
Last spring, Germany seemed to be dealing with a huge decline in the number of pigs. The German pig herd numbered 3 million pigs on 25,37 May, making it the lowest level in 20 years reaches. Now the historical contraction appears to be slightly smaller than reported and the figures have been adjusted.
Adjusted up
The new figures show that there are actually 25,48 million pigs. As a result, the German pig herd does not fall by 2,2%, as previously reported, but by 1,8%. The pig herd thus has 479.300 fewer pigs than last year.
The number of breeding sows increased by 5.400 to 1,78 million, which is 0,7% lower than last year. There are 4,73 million young pigs, a decrease of 2,5%. The finisher stock amounts to 11,1 million pigs and is 5,2% lower than last year. There are more piglets than last year, with an increase of 2,3% there are 7,85 million piglets.
