US pork exports are on the rise again. Although the export figures for July are higher than in the previous month, they are still below the level of last year.

This is evident from the figures from The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF). In total, US pork exports in July amounted to 222.035 tonnes. Compared to the same period last year, this is a decrease of 5%. The export value was 12% lower than last year at $548,3 million. July exports accounted for 26% of total pork production compared to 29,3% last year.

An advantage for the American pig sector is that it sold more pork abroad than in June of this year. Over the first 7 months of the year, pork exports also remained above last year's levels. No less than 20% more pork was exported, against a 22% higher export value.

In total, 30,7% of total pork production was exported. This is considerably more than the 26,3% last year. The higher export figures mainly come from the first few months of the year. A record amount of pork was exported in the first quarter of 2020. The US was unable to maintain this pace in the following months.

Sales to China
China remained the largest sales market for American pork in July. About 71.853 tons of U.S. pork has been purchased by China. The level is 5% higher than over the same period last year, but is the lowest of the year. In other words, the Chinese show less appetite for American pork.

According to Dan Halstrom, CEO of USMEF, export figures are generally supported by Chinese interest, but also by a recovery in exports to Mexico, Vietnam and the Philippines. Exports to Mexico have remained well below last year's levels, but have increased significantly compared to the figures for May and June. Exports to Vietnam in July were the highest in 10 years and increased by no less than 278% compared to last year.

Positive look
Despite the many challenges related to the corona crisis and logistical limitations, USMEF remains optimistic about the second half of 2020. This is due to a growing interest in emerging markets and a growing domestic offering.
