Germany may have been affected by African swine fever (ASF). This has been feared for some time and now seems to have become a reality.
The suspected infected wild boar was found in Landkrei Oder-Spree in the state of Brandenburg, near the Polish border and in the immediate vicinity of pig farms.
It remains to be seen whether the wild boar is actually infected. Further research is currently being carried out by the German Animal Health Service (FLI). The result of this is expected tomorrow (September 11). It is quite possible that Germany will lose its ASF-free status when the virus is officially diagnosed.
Possible export stop
It remains to be seen until the results of the investigation are known. The big question now is what the consequences are for German export opportunities. Germany annually exports approximately 1 million tons of pork abroad, and this export is in great danger with this discovery. It is expected that if it actually concerns ASF, large buyers of German pork will immediately stop their imports.
Demarcate terrain
According to Gundula Teltewskaja, administrator in the Oder-Spree district, the find does not come as a surprise and there are already plans to take immediate action. The priorities currently lie in demarcating the site and protecting the surrounding pig farms. A fence will be placed within a radius of 4 kilometers around the site.
Germany already stocked up with the necessary fencing materials for this scenario months ago. Tomorrow morning more will become clear about the possible extension of the protection radius.
Danish Crown
Danish Crown postpones pig price publication
The Danish slaughterhouse Danish Crown, also active in Germany, is shocked by the news and says that an outbreak could have major consequences for German pork exports. The slaughter company therefore indicates that it is still uncertain whether the pig price for next week can be published this afternoon. The pricing in Germany weighs heavily on the rest in Europe. An outbreak could also have far-reaching consequences for the Dutch market.
