The outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in Germany is causing pig and piglet prices to plummet.
The German pig price (VEZG) for the current week has been retroactively reduced by €0,20 to €1,27 per kilo. An unprecedentedly rapid reduction, prompted by the great uncertainty on the European market. German slaughterhouses are taking in significantly fewer pigs, the market has learned.
The piglets are also falling sharply in price. The VEZG piglet price for next week has been reduced by €12 to an amount of €27. This is a historically low price level. Dutch traders have announced that piglet flocks are being canceled and that the supply is increasing rapidly. It is still difficult to say to what extent Dutch prices will fall.
