Germany has intensified its search for wild boars after wild boars infected with African Swine Fever were found since 10 September. How is the search currently going and what is the status of found cadavers?
Since it became known that there are wild boars in Germany that carry ASF, more cases have been sought. The infection number has now risen to 13, all in the state of Brandenburg. The core area has also been expanded, it now concerns a size of 60 kilometers and an area of 15.000 hectares. The endangered area remains unchanged and remains within a radius of 20 to 25 kilometers around the find in Spree-Neisse.
How is it searched?
In Spree-Neisse, Germany, a group of about 35 people search for wild boars every day. When a cadaver is found, the area is immediately closed off and the find is sampled. In the coming days, the search will also be expanded to the endangered area. The outbreak is also on the agenda in Brussels. Today (September 21) the African Swine Fever is being discussed in the European Commission.
Poland
AVP has entered Germany via the border with Poland, where the virus has been prevalent for some time. Recently, the virus was also found for the first time in central Poland, where about 110 pigs on pig farms were found to be infected. This took place near the city of Laszkow. So far this is the only report of AVP in the area. It is an unusual development as no wild boar infections have been reported in the area, so it is believed that the virus has spread through humans.
It is not the only ASF outbreak in Poland that has caused a stir. Two more outbreaks have been reported on pig farms. One of the outbreaks concerns a large farm with nearly 2 pigs that have all been culled. The company is located on the northern edge of former restricted zones, where no infected wild boars have been found so far.
