German police open a hunt for illegal immigrants in the meat sector

23 September 2020 - Wouter Baan

A major police operation is underway in Germany this morning (September 23), seeking illegal workers in the meat sector. About 800 agents are on hand to monitor 2 companies that are active in 5 federal states.

The German police are looking for illegal workers in commercial and residential areas, among other places. There are indications that Eastern Europeans, especially Romanians, have been smuggled in as migrant workers with forged documents. The action is intended to secure evidence. Also, €1,5 million worth of goods has been seized, German media report.

It is not yet clear which companies are involved. A company near Hanover is reportedly involved. The actions are taking place in Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony, among others. In any case, the raid on Saxony Anhalt does not concern the German Tönnies slaughterhouse, where Germany's largest meat concern operates a large location in Weißenfels. A spokesperson for the meat company says the company is not affected by the raid.

Ban on temporary agency workers
Temporary workers have become discredited due to the corona outbreaks at slaughterhouses in Germany. The German government approved a bill at the end of July to improve enforcement in the field of occupational safety. This means that from 2021 temporary workers may no longer be used for the slaughter and processing of meat.
