25 September 2020 - Jorine Cosse - 1 reaction

Meat giant Tönnies is going to expand its activities beyond the German borders, in Europe's largest pig country, Spain. Spanish media report that the company is investing €75 million in a new slaughterhouse near Calamocha, in the province of Aragon in northern Spain.

The planned complex will cover an area of 300.000 square meters, with an associated pigsty where 1.000 pigs will be accommodated between transport and slaughter. The project is expected to create 1.000 jobs. The final production capacity is 625 pigs per hour, a total of 10.000 pigs. Construction is expected to be completed in 2024.

ultra modern
According to reports, the new facility will be a hyper-modern location that is fully equipped. For example, there is robotization in the cutting department, among other things, which should make work more efficient and safer. In addition to the cutting department, the complex contains a slaughterhouse, processing area, offices, staff facilities, laboratory and other outbuildings.

In addition, space has been made available in the investment space for a modern factory for the production and packaging of ready-to-eat pork products. These products are said to be marketed in Spain and other European countries. The company also appears to be planning to sell frozen pork cuts from Spain to Asia and other continents.

Europe
This is not Tönnies' first European trip. In 2017, the company announced that it had bought land in Russia to build Russia's largest slaughterhouse. To date, little is known about the progress of this slaughterhouse. The company also has branches in Denmark, France, Poland and the United Kingdom.
