Various slaughterhouses in the Netherlands intend to slaughter on Saturdays in the coming weeks. These are positive developments with regard to the situation on the pig and piglet market in our country.
Inquiries with the NVWA reveal that requests from slaughterhouses to slaughter on Saturdays are increasing. The supervisory authority indicates that it intends to comply with the requests as much as possible. Vion and Compaxo indicate that they will start slaughtering on Saturdays in the coming weeks and Westfort also has similar ambitions.
This is a favorable development with regard to the ample pig supply in our country. In addition to the export of live pigs being disappointing, there is a seasonally increasing supply in the background. This does not make it easier to sell the already heavy fattening pigs in many places.
Meat sales are not disappointing
Meat sales are not bad, which probably motivates the Saturday slaughter. There are additional sales opportunities in Asia for European slaughterhouses now that German slaughterhouses have been denied exports. And the situation is not critical within Europe either, although players are clearly present in Germany. Combine this with the already full cold stores (due to corona) and customers can sit back and relax. Nevertheless, the prices of many carcass parts have stabilized.
The Dutch pig trade almost unanimously advocates an unchanged DCA Exchange Price 2.0 for slaughtered pigs, which remains the same at €1,34 per kilo. The price of live pigs drops by a cent to €1,04. This is mainly because the export of live pigs is under pressure.
