The number of wild boars in Germany with African swine fever (ASF) continues to rise. The pig herd on pig farms has so far remained infection-free. on the earlier ban on harvesting in ASF areas exemptions are now granted.
The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI) has now confirmed 35 German cases of ASF. Of these, 25 have been detected in the Oder-Spree district. The remaining 9 were found in the Spree-Neisse district. To date, pig farms are still free of ASF. Pigs in the affected areas are still not allowed to be moved, with exceptions.
Exemptions from the use of agriculture and forestry
It was previously announced that the use of agriculture and forestry has been banned until further notice in the high-risk districts in northeastern Germany, Spree-Neisse, Dahme-Spreewald and Oder-Spree. Exemptions are now being given in the endangered area. Before this exemption is granted, areas must be searched in advance by persons employed by the government or by persons working under official supervision. Only when the area has been officially approved by the district can the land be used again.
Anna Heyer-Stuffer, State Secretary at the Ministry of Consumer Protection, says that the situation may also change after release. "Should ASF cases be found outside the current core area again, we will have to expand the rules of the core area."
Use of sniffer dogs
In order to search for ASF infections as effectively as possible, Germany has put together a team of detection dogs. The 4 dogs have been searching for wild boars in the Oder-Spree district since last week, but no carcasses were found. The search with sniffer dogs was called off yesterday afternoon. According to Petra Senger, the district's official veterinarian, the lack of finds is beneficial. "This provides more confirmation that the situation mainly takes place in the core area".
