Yesterday (September 30) the discovery of 2 new infections with African swine fever (ASF) in Germany was confirmed. Because one of these infections took place in a new district, the situation is more threatening than estimated.
It is the infection in the Märkisch Oderland district, which was previously ASF free, that is increasing the concerns. The infected wild boar was shot near the German-Polish border. The 2 outbreaks in Brandenburg are considered separately. It is also feared that the virus in Germany has already spread further than is believed.
In the district of Märkisch Oderland, a provisionally endangered area is being established with a radius of approximately 15 kilometers from the find. Redefining the core zone is currently a priority. There are also temporary restrictions on the use of agriculture and forestry.
International export
With the further spread of the virus, Germany's international export opportunities continue to decline. After the first finds of AVP, countries such as China and the Philippines stopped their pork imports from Germany. There have been lobbies since then for China to reopen its borders, but these efforts were to no avail. Now that there is also a third district in Germany with an ASF infection, the chance that China will agree to the regionalization principle, whereby only ASF-free zones are allowed to export pork, continues to decrease.
Permanent fence
The state of Brandenburg wants to reserve €6 million for the installation of permanent fences. This requires the approval of the budget committee of the state parliament. An application will be prepared shortly. Katrin Lange, Minister of Finance, confirmed this. “Everything possible must be done to prevent further spread and to support farmers in this difficult situation.”

In the meantime, hunting in the original core area is being further intensified and mother boars are also allowed to be shot, which is absolutely necessary according to the ministry in Potsdam. Local hunters who are familiar with the core area may also be called in. The Minister of Consumer Protection, Ursula Nonnemacher, is expected to announce more about the current situation in a press conference today.
