The number of wild boars with African swine fever (ASF) in Germany is increasing. The new cases are all located in the state of Brandenburg.
The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI) confirmed ASF in several carcasses found last weekend. In total, the counter now stands at 49 infections among wild boars in Brandenburg, pig farming is still free of the virus to date.
The new carcasses were all found within the original core area, in Spree-Neisse near the Oder-Spree border. No new cases have yet been discovered in Märkisch Oderland, where an infection was also detected last Wednesday (September 30).
Hunt across the country
Wild boars are being hunted more intensively throughout the country. Initially only hunting in restricted zones was stepped up, but measures are being stepped up by the Ministry of Consumer Protection to prevent the introduction of the virus in ASF-free parts of the country or to enable early detection.
No hunting in demarcated areas
It is not yet allowed to hunt wild boars everywhere. There is still a provisional ban on hunting for all animal species in demarcated endangered areas. This is in order not to deter wild boars before the areas are completely fenced off, if potentially infected wild boars startle and move on to other areas, the situation becomes even more serious.
