Emergency call to German politicians for pig support

6 October 2020 - Chanti Oussoren

German industry associations call on politicians to take measures to support the pig supply chain. Due to the corona crisis, the chain is seriously disrupting and it has incurred a considerable slaughter backlog.

In Germany, the slaughter capacity has fallen sharply due to the corona crisis. Now that AVP is also emerging, concerns are increasing further. The ISN interest group, together with industry associations, has therefore sent an emergency call to the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony. The German Raiffeisen Association (DRV) also calls on politicians to increase the slaughter capacity. The ISN estimates the surplus of pigs ready for slaughter at about 300.000 to 400.000 heads.

According to the association, measures are needed to keep the pig supply chain intact. For example, requests are made to grant special permits for extra slaughter capacity on Sundays and public holidays. There are also calls for an extension of working hours.

European pig prices
Now that Germany has also lost its AVP-free status, changes have occurred in the German ISN price comparison. The German pig price has fallen and the Danish pig price is also unable to maintain its level.

The German pig price had to drop sharply in mid-September and fell by no less than €0,20 to a price of €1,22. In the following weeks, the pig price did not fall further, so Germany is just short of the bottom of the price comparison. Closer is Belgium with a price that fell to €1,17.

The Dutch pig price has risen slightly due to the German price drop and is currently in fourth place with a price of €1,30. The distance to the Danish pig price, which currently occupies third position, is great. The Danish price is currently at €1,53, just below the French quote of €1,56. Spain remains at the top of the price comparison with a pig price that has been stable for weeks at €1,72.
