Vion Germany to integrate more employees

6 October 2020 - Chanti Oussoren

Vion Food Group will hire more permanent employees from next year. The working conditions that were under a magnifying glass during the corona crisis have ensured that Germany will no longer allow temporary workers on a flexible basis in the meat sector from 1 January 2021.

The corona crisis has shed more light on the working conditions of migrants in the meat sector. Partly because of this, changes are underway in the sector and Germany has imposed a ban on flexi-working for temporary workers in the meat sector.

3.300 permanent employees
As of January 1, 2021, 3.300 employees will be permanently employed at Vion's German sites. With this, Vion terminates the flexible contracts via employment agencies. The employees will mainly be deployed for slaughtering, breeding and packaging. Nothing will change for staff who already have a permanent contract.

Roger Legaht, HR director at Vion, emphasizes that the integration of flex workers has a high priority. He says that language courses and concrete support are provided to reduce language barriers between employees. In the coming weeks, the new employees can indicate by means of a survey how they can best be supported.

Westfleisch and Tönnies
Vion is not the first abattoir to announce that it will integrate employees. Westfleisch already announced at the end of June to ban temporary workers† Tönnies also followed suit and indicated in September that they would integrate 6.000 new employees into the company.
