The situation surrounding African swine fever (ASF) in Germany is getting worse. A new infection has been confirmed in Märkisch-Oderland, the second core area near the German-Polish border. Several sick and dead animals have also surfaced in the district by means of drones.
That the situation around African swine fever (ASF) in Germany was worse than previously thought was already apparent when a second core area was set up, namely in Märkisch-Oderland. Until recently, only 1 infection had been detected there, but it now appears that it does not stop there.
The Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) confirmed 3 new infections in wild boars at the end of last week. One of these infections occurred in the second core zone in Bleyen in the Märkisch-Oderland district. The remaining 2 cases were in Neuzelle in the Oder-Spree district, the original core area. In total, the number of confirmed infections among wild boars stands at 53. To date, pig farms are still free from the deadly virus.
AVP has been in Märkisch-Oderland for some time now
Beforehand, there was still hope that AVP had been discovered early in Märkisch-Oderland and that the situation would be somewhat manageable. This does not appear to be the case. The carcass found in Märkisch-Oderland was close to where the first infected wild boar was discovered. The carcass was hidden in the butts and the FLI estimates that it had been there for at least 4 weeks.
It doesn't stop there, through the use of drones, several sick animals have been discovered on the Oder Island near Küstrin-Kiets, also located in the Märkisch-Oderland district. In total, about 17 dead boars and about 30 live animals have been discovered, several of which are believed to be ill. According to Thomas Behrendt, the district spokesman, half of the animals are already dead and the other half are clearly ill. "The animals are currently being observed with drones, intervention would be too dangerous because the sick animals are very aggressive," Behrendt said.
