German slaughterhouse comes with a minimum price guarantee

15 October 2020 - Chanti Oussoren

Edeka Südwest Fleisch, a German meat processor in Rheinsetten, has announced a minimum price guarantee to pig farms of €1,40 per kilo of slaughtered weight. The company, which is affiliated with the supermarket group Edeka, wants to offer pig farmers financial security with this.

The company introduces a minimum price guarantee for pork from producers who supply within the regional Gutfleisch program. For example, the meat processor wants to give pig farmers a helping hand now that the prices for pork have come under pressure due to the African swine fever (ASF).

About 300 pig farmers supply Edeka Südwest through the regional programme. The processor guarantees a minimum price of €1,40 per kilo slaughter weight until the end of the year. The market price is currently at €1,27, which means that the slaughterhouse is voluntarily adding €0,13. When the market price is above €1,40 again, the price guarantee will expire and the market price will be returned.

Gutfleisch
The Gutfleisch program represents one of the regional brands of Edeka Südwest Fleisch. The pork in this program comes exclusively from pig farmers in the federal states within the sales area of Edeke Südwest and has higher animal welfare criteria.
