400.000 pigs ready for slaughter on hold, number is rising

The slaughter capacity in Germany has fallen sharply due to the corona crisis. According to ISN, the association of German pig farmers, there are currently about 400.000 pigs hanging above the market and this number is increasing every week.

Many slaughterhouses have had to close their doors recently as a result of corona infections among the staff, as a result of which the slaughter capacity has fallen significantly. The situation seemed to calm down for a while, but the capacity is not yet at full strength and the oversupply of pigs is increasing. Now that Germany has also lost its export license to China, finding a sales market is a difficult process.

ISN estimates that there are a total of around 400.000 pigs ready for slaughter hanging above the market. That number increases every week by 70.000 to 90.000 pigs. In order to support the pig chain in this difficult time, industry organizations already did a emergency appeal to politicians for support.

Limited capacity
The slaughter capacity has fallen sharply at many slaughterhouses. Take, for example, the main location of Tönnies in Rheda-Wiedenbrück. According to ISN, approximately 130.000 pigs per week are slaughtered at this location, currently the capacity is limited to 90.000 pigs per week.

The slaughter capacity has also been reduced considerably at the Tönnies location in Sögel. At the beginning of October, it was reported that the slaughterhouse had to close due to corona infections among the staff, but it later turned out that the location was still open. partially open.

Vion's slaughter location in Emstek is also not running at full capacity. Normally about 66.000 pigs are slaughtered there per week, but the slaughterhouse is reportedly still running at 50% of capacity. Due to the general corona measures, other slaughterhouses can also take in about 4 to 5% fewer animals than normal. According to the ISN, this reduces the slaughter capacity by another 30.000 animals per week.

if they increase the price by € 0.05, this number immediately decreases. so much is given up because of uncertainty.
