It was already in line with expectations: the prices of chunks of pork slowly move upwards in October. Only baby piglet pellet holds last month's price. What is the outlook for the coming months according to the Boerenbusiness Compound feed price indicator?
Last month the baby piglet pellet fell the most, but for this month the price remains the same at €35,45 per 100 kilos. This makes this price the only one that remains stable. The other prizes all add €0,05. No drastic changes, but is this the tipping point in the downward trend?
Sow chunks
Last year, the sow chunks remained relatively stable compared to the previous 2 years. For both kibble types, there was just under €1 price difference between peak and trough, while this was different in 2018 and 2019. The increase of €0,05 puts an end to the decline that started in May. Sow pellet pregnancy comes to a price of €25,05 per 100 kilos of pellet and the sow pellet lakto is listed at €29,35 per 100 kilos.
The starter/transition pellet and pork chunks also increase by €0,05 per 100 kilos. Last month, both chunks came with a price increase of €0,10. For October, the starting/transitional pellet is listed at a price of €28,35 and the fattening pig chunks are €24,15.
Rising raw material prices
The price increases are largely due to rising commodity prices since July. These prices fell sharply after the corona crisis entered the Netherlands. At the beginning of July, a decline can also be noticed in (feed) wheat and barley, among other things. Yet they recovered quite quickly. It just takes some time before this price change is reflected in the chunk prices.
According to the Boerenbusiness Compound feed price indicator Bulk prices will continue to follow this upward trend for some time to come. The forecast compares significantly with the average index of 100 points. Given that the 5-year average of, among other things, pork chunks has developed upwards since the end of October, it is expected based on the indicator that the price will continue to move further above this price level.
