Pressure on pig price continues unabated

20 November 2020 - Wouter Baan - 1 reaction

Despite the fact that pig prices have already fallen sharply in recent weeks, the price pressure continues. The pig price is the victim of the difficult split in which the market is currently in. There are almost no bright spots.

After reductions in surrounding countries, the German pork price was also cut and shaved this week. The leading VEZG quotation fell by 8 cents to €1,19 per kilo. As a result, the piglet price has also skyrocketed among our eastern neighbors. The VEZG quotation for piglets will drop by €5 next week to a record low of €22.

Meat sales very low
The market, as everyone knows, is dominated by corona and African swine fever. This results in an extremely wide supply due to slaughter problems in Germany and difficult meat sales. Tönnies speaks of a dramatic situation. Other years the Christmas question has now come into play, but it has not yet presented itself this year. And not much is expected of it in the meat sector. Slaughterhouses indicate that sales to China have slowed down somewhat now that the shipments for the Chinese New Year, which takes place on February 12, have largely been shipped.

Sliding with pigs
The biggest challenge is and remains getting the pigs placed. And as annoying as it is, the price comes second. Many traders have to shift thousands of pigs from week to week. Something that causes many headaches, especially with the broken weeks around Christmas and New Year that are already approaching.

It is expected that slaughterhouses will reduce prices again in the coming weeks. The statements for the DCA Exchange Price 2.0 also indicate a reduction. The quotation for slaughtered pigs drops by €0,05 to €1,20 per kilo. The price of slaughtered pigs also drops from €0,05 to €0,90 per kilo.
