What about ASF infections in Germany?

30 November 2020 - Chanti Oussoren

Germany does not seem to have got rid of African swine fever (ASF) yet. For a while, the growth in infection numbers seemed to stagnate, but it is now rising again. What is the current state of affairs?

ASF infections have been reported in Germany since mid-September. So far, only wild boar infections have been found and the pig herd remains free of the deadly virus.

Oder-Spree hit hardest
New infections are still being discovered among wild boars. The Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) has now confirmed 184 infections. According to the most recent data, by far the largest part of these infections comes from the Oder-Spree district, where 144 cases have been detected. In the district of Märkisch-Oderland 18 infected wild boars were found and in Spree-Neisse the counter is 14.

The other 8 infected wild boars came from Saxony. Until October 27, Saxony was still under ASF-free area, but since an infected wild boar was shot on that day, it turned out that the virus is not only making a round through Brandenburg. The wild boar probably entered the state via the Poles, the find was more than 100 kilometers from the infections in Brandenburg.

Help for pig farmers
Although the virus has not yet affected pig farms, the farms are being hit hard by disease in combination with the corona crisis. The representative of German pig farmers has already pleaded for emergency aid for pig farmers. Last Friday, German ministers conferred and decided to hold a to open a private pigmeat storage scheme. According to the ISN, the pig farmers do not directly benefit from the storage scheme and a support package must be drawn up, similar to that of the catering industry in Germany.
