China finds corona on imported meat again

8 December 2020 - Wouter Baan

China has again detected the coronavirus on meat imported from South America. The discovery was made in the city of Wuhan, where the coronavirus was first diagnosed last year.

The virus was found on beef from Uruguay and pork from Brazil. The frozen pork had already been shipped to the Chinese city of Shanghai in June and then driven to Wuhan. It had been stored there since the end of July. The also frozen beef had been in Wuhan since the end of March.

Since March
Apparently, the virus can survive for a longer period of time in cold stores. The staff members who came into contact with the contaminated meat were all tested negative afterwards. In November, China already discovered the virus on imported meat from South America.

China is very hesitant to get corona through food products such as meat and fish. When there were corona outbreaks at European and American slaughterhouses this summer, the country immediately imposed an export ban. In the meantime, these meat bans are off the track again.
