Vion focuses on blockchain for a transparent chain

Pork producer Vion has announced that it will make its chains transparent using blockchain technology. The company is starting to digitally connect all partners within the Good Farming Star pork chain so that it becomes easier to exchange and view data. 

The Good Farming Star chain is the first chain to connect Vion to blockchain. According to COO Business Unit Vion Pork John de Jonge, themes such as sustainability, transparency, integrity, food safety and quality are becoming increasingly important in pork production. In addition, these themes form the basis of the demand-driven chains, according to De Jonge. Betting on blockchain makes it easier to generate an open and transparent data exchange between chain partners. According to Vion, the connection also improves efficiency.

Efficiency benefits
Director Livestock & Supply Chains of Vion Farming Koen van Bergen says that digital data exchange can ensure efficiency throughout the chain. Blockchain generates insight into, among other things, the origin of raw materials, animal health, slaughter information and logistics. The pig farmer receives important information for his business operations through the integrated management information.

The information is exchanged by means of the JoinData program. According to Vion, this ensures that the chain partners can share their data in a secure manner. They can choose themselves with whom they share the data. The data of the entrepreneur is fully secured via an authorization register. According to Vion, this step is the first towards a future where transparent and secure digital information is exchanged between the links in the food chain.
