2020 is almost over and with that the pig sector can end a restless year, in which corona and the outbreak of African swine fever in Germany threw a spanner in the works. In front of...
The month of December was calm in terms of price movements, but this calm was in a sense desirable after the sharp write-downs in recent months. The German VEZG quotation remained stable again on Wednesday at €1,19 per kilo. Since 2005 (and probably even longer ago), the price around the turn of the year has not been as low as it is now.
Until next week, the DCA Fair Price 2.0 will also remain at €1,20 per kilo slaughtered weight. The price of live pigs is equal at €0,90 per kilo. These are historically low levels as well.
Be patient
In the sector, it is very important to achieve higher pig prices, because it is difficult to earn money with these levels. Patience is probably required for this, in the first weeks of the new year, few fireworks are to be expected anyway. Because the meat-processing industry has yet to start up and the pig supply in Germany is very large, prices are more likely to be under pressure than the way up can be started.
When the supply dries up in mid-2021, the coronavirus disappears more into the background due to implementations of the vaccine and China remains on the market, 2021 will not be a lost year in advance. However, it is not there yet.
