The number of German infections with African swine fever (ASF) continues to rise steadily. The finds remain within the contamination areas and the pig herd is still free of infections.
It has now been more than 100 days since the first ASF infection was confirmed in Germany. Just before the turn of the year, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) confirmed another 13 new ASF infections in wild boars. Of these, 12 came from the Oder-Spree district in Brandenburg and 1 wild boar came from Görlitz in Saxony. However, it does not stop there, according to the TierSeuchenInformatonSystem (TSIS), another 4 new infections were found on January 9.
With this, the number of infections passes 400 and the counter currently stands at 412 confirmed cases. The majority of these infections (395) come from Brandenburg and the other infections (17) come from Saxony. The pig herd is still free of the deadly virus.
Satisfied with measures
Despite the increasing numbers, Anna Heyer-Stuffer, head of the AVP crisis team in Brandenburg, is satisfied with the measures taken. Within weeks, large parts of the threatened area were fenced off in an effort to limit the spread of the virus. "In total, more than 300 kilometers of permanent fences have already been built and the intensive search for game is supported by many people," emphasizes Heyer-Stuffer.
Other states are also preparing for the possible introduction of the virus. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the construction of a fencing along the German-Polish border has been completed and the focus is also on containing the wild boar population.
