Pig breeding gives a glimpse into the kitchen

8 January 2021 - Chanti Oussoren

On Thursday evening (January 7), pig farming showed how the breeding process of pigs has changed over the years via the Keurdienst van Waarde program of KRO-NRCV. Pig farmers give a look at their barn and Class AI also shows the new semen collection station.

Over the years, a sow usually produces more and more piglets. This can be achieved by optimizing the breeding process. In the episode The program examines this process and states that because sows have grown longer, they are able to give birth to more piglets.

Pig breeder Wilko Hendriks confirms this: "Our breeding policy is aimed at breeding sows with more teats. This all happens in a natural way. We use the available techniques for optimization, but we don't breed what an animal cannot do."

Puzzle with DNA
Hendriks explains that a sow can give birth to more piglets through strict selection in the breeding process. "A piece of DNA is collected with every piglet that is bred and through the DNA it is possible to breed for certain characteristics. Because the sows have become longer over the years, there is also room for extra teats and therefore more piglets.

Stefan Derks, director of pig genetics producer Klasse Ki, also gives a look behind the scenes of the new sperm recovery station† Among other things, it is shown how the bears are housed and how the collection of sperm works, which is then spread all over the world.
