Regionalization Agreement between Japan and Hungary

14 January 2021 - Chanti Oussoren

It took some time, but Japan and Hungary have reached a regionalization agreement on pork exports. Hungary is now allowed to export meat to Japan from free areas that are free from African swine fever (ASF).

ASF has been prevalent in Hungary for quite some time, limiting the country's pork exports. Negotiations have been going on for more than 2 years to reach a regionalization agreement with Japan, in which pork may only be exported from AVP-free areas.

The long negotiation period is successful. On December 16, both parties reached an agreement. Pork from areas in Hungary where there is no ASF may be exported after approval and provided it has a veterinary export certificate.

Germany in talks with China
Hungary is the first country in the world to reach a regionalization agreement with Japan. Now that AVP has also hit Germany, the German agriculture minister is lobbying hard in Beijing to also reach a regionalization agreement. These attempts have so far been unsuccessful, but the Chinese government wants to continue talks to see what is possible.
