German schweinesteu still high, pig price stable

15 January 2021 - Chanti Oussoren

The Dutch pig market is not yet off to a good start in the new year. The oversupply of predominantly heavy pigs is mainly the result of not using the full slaughter capacity. The situation has still not improved in Germany either.

While the Dutch pig market is getting some relief due to a contained oversupply and sales opportunities that are continuing nicely, the same cannot be said about the German pig market. There, the slaughter capacities and sales opportunities remain a thorn in the side. There are still many slaughter pigs on hold, 'only' 1 pigs were slaughtered in week 730.000, and in combination with the seasonal quiet demand, pig congestion has increased rather than decreased.

The fact that Dutch sales are currently running more smoothly than German sales is largely due to export demand. Outside the EU, it is mainly China that imports considerable quantities of pork, but there are also export opportunities within the EU. There is a demand for fattening pigs, especially from Spain, and quite a bit of meat can also be exported to Italy.

Pig prices in Europe
According to the ISN price comparison, Spain and Denmark currently have the highest prices. Both countries use a price of €1,46 this week and the price remains unchanged compared to last week. France remains in third position with a price of €1,38, the Netherlands follows at €1,17 and at the bottom of the comparison Germany and Belgium are at €1,14 and €0,98.

DCA stock exchange price will not continue to increase
Last week the DCA quotations took a small step up. Both the DCA Exchange Price 2.0 for slaughtered pigs and the price for live pigs increased by €0,01. The odds for week 3 remain unchanged. The Stock Exchange Price 2.0 is €1,21 for slaughtered pigs and the price for live pigs remains at €0,91. The VEZG quotation also remained unchanged in Germany at €1,19 per kilo.
