Class Ki grows strongly despite shrinking market

21 January 2021 - Chanti Oussoren

Class Ki has deposited considerably more sperm in 2020 than in previous years. The pig genetics supplier, which supplies both at home and abroad, has managed to achieve growth despite the stoppage scheme.

In total, about 700.000 doses of semen were sold last year, an increase of 20% compared to last year. More semen was sold from both the Piétrain lines and the DanBred breeding lines than in 2019.

Domestic sales motive
The vast majority of pig genetics is sold domestically. About 80% of the production does not cross the border. Nevertheless, the export is important for the sales volume and the genetics are exported to about 15 countries worldwide. "Class has an important role in sending the best Danish genetics around the world via the Netherlands", says Mark van Gaal of Klasse Ki.

The DanBred genetics stand out more and more, with a 92% market share, DanBred Duroc is the most widely used terminal boar in Denmark, accounting for a turnover of 5 million doses of terminal boar semen. In addition, breeding for piglet vitality by DanBred has already paid off with the introduction of LG5 at Duroc.

Not yet grown
Despite the strong growth this year, Stefan Derks, director of Klasse Ki, expects significant growth to be achieved this year as well. At the beginning of January Derks could still be seen in the program Inspection Service of Value, there was shown how the breeding process of pigs has been optimized over the years and Klasse Ki gave a glimpse into the new sperm recovery station.
