African swine fever (ASF) continues to spread in Germany. Last week the number of infections increased in Brandenburg, but it now appears that things are also wrong in Saxony. A new infection has been detected there outside the threatened area.
The carcass was found in the Görlitz district. This is located south of the original demarcated area (the white zone), but still within the existing buffer zone. The Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) has now confirmed that it is an ASF infection. Also 80 meters from the Polish border, a wild boar was shot and ASF was detected. This brings the current number of infections in Saxony to 19.
Expansion zone
Due to the discovery of the infected carcass outside the current restricted zone, the zones have to be expanded. The new restricted zones in Saxony will be announced this week. The German Minister of Social Affairs confirms that the new find makes the fight against ASF more difficult.
It is imperative that new fencing is installed quickly and that the restricted area is expanded. The first steps have already been taken in this regard. A mobile fence is being built within a radius of 2 to 3 kilometers to prevent the virus from spreading further. The original endangered area was already almost completely closed off with a permanent fence. The new parts of the endangered areas will also be fenced off as soon as possible. "We will quickly adjust the existing threatened area and the buffer zone," said the minister.
Brandenburg
New infections are also still being detected in Brandenburg. The FLI has now confirmed 30 new cases, bringing the total number of infections in the state to 527. Here too, infections were found outside the core area, but the carcasses were within the threatened area. The white zone is already completely enclosed with a sturdy fence.
