Piglet price steadily increases thanks to export demand

25 January 2021 - Chanti Oussoren - 13 comments

The piglet market has experienced a period of revival in recent weeks. Also this week the DCA BestPigletPrice is taking a step up, the degree of price increase has become less sharp because the sale of finishing pigs is not yet going smoothly.

The piglet market ushered in 2021 with significant price increases. These were no longer an issue in the past 2 weeks, but the quotation still increased small steps. Both times the price increased by €0,50. Unfortunately, a more significant increase is not possible yet, because pork sales are not yet going smoothly.

While the negative trend on the piglet market quickly turned into a positive trend, the fattening pig market is still lagging behind. The slaughter pace limits fattening pig sales. The stocks in German cold stores are still very large, so slaughterhouses are slowing down the pace somewhat.

Nevertheless, the piglet market was able to benefit from good export demand, especially from Spain. In the Netherlands, piglets are becoming on the expensive side, but the export demand is so good that prices are being increased.

Piglet price continues to increase steadily
Partly due to the good export demand, the piglet price is steadily increasing. The DCA BestPigletPrice is once again making a plus of €0,50 this week and is trading at €29,50.

The price increase also continues in Germany. The domestic piglet supply is decreasing there due to a lower sow population. The VEZG quotation is €26 per piglet, an increase of €1 compared to last week. Denmark also continues the upward trend and the price rises to €33,60.
