Chinese are asking for American pork again

29 January 2021 - Kimberly Bakker

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) expects total meat exports to China to increase in 2020 and 2021. The reason? It is expected that the outbreak of African swine fever in China has passed its peak and meat consumption among the Chinese will increase again.

The American statisticians assume that meat exports to China will increase by 2020% in 4, and then increase by another 2021% in 1. "Despite China's high trading pace, consumption in the country has fallen to the lowest level in more than a decade," the statisticians report. Meat consumption in the country is expected to increase by 2%.

Expand herd
The US Department of Agriculture expects global pork production to rise 2021% to 2 million tonnes in 103,8. This is mainly due to the recovery of domestic pork production in China. “Higher prices continue to encourage producers to expand their herds, raising expectations for China by 5%.” However, this is still nowhere near the figures before the African swine fever crisis.

New figures show beef exports to China have reached new heights, reaching 8.372 million tonnes. That's an increase of 700% compared to a year ago. The export value increased by 642% to $60,1 million in November. By comparison, exports to China for all of 2019 amounted to $86,1 million. From January to November, exports to China amounted to 33.081 million tons, a plus of 277%.
