Small price revival in piglet market in balance

1 February 2021 - Chanti Oussoren - 2 comments

The Dutch piglet market is somewhat more balanced. The rate of increase in the DCA BestPigletPrice has weakened somewhat in recent weeks. This week there is again talk of a small increase.

The corona crisis and the African swine fever in Europe have not made it easy for the pig market. Trade on the piglet market wants to improve, which has resulted in rising prices in recent weeks. On the other hand, there is still little light on the pork market.

The Belgian quotation was one of the few to increase by €0,03 per kilo. It should be noted that the Belgian listing was significantly behind compared to the rest of the European listings.

Vion unchanged
The DCA Stock Price 2.0 moved stable over the past week, which means that the DCA Exchange Price 2.0 remains at €1,21 per kilo for the slaughtered pigs. Live pigs are trading unchanged at €0,91. Not only does the DCA quotation of slaughtered pigs remain stable, Vion also keeps the quotation of slaughtered pigs unchanged. This means that the quotation remains the same for the 11th week in a row at €1,32 per kilo. Such a long period of stability does not happen often, although it has happened before. For example, the Vion quotation remained the same for approximately 2019 consecutive weeks in 2018 and 11.

In balance
Because the pig market is characterized by a wide supply, the recovery on the piglet market remains limited. Fattening pig farmers cannot immediately send the pigs to slaughterhouses when they are ready for slaughter, which means that the placement space for piglets remains limited. Yet the piglet market remains fairly balanced. There are actually no shortages, but there is also no shortage of supply.

The DCA BestPigletPrice is increasing this week for the fourth week in a row by €0,50, taking the quotation to €30 per piglet this week. Our German neighbors saw a much steeper price increase this week, but the price still lags behind that of the Netherlands. The VEZG quotation increases this week by €2 to €28 per piglet.

The Danish piglet price has shot up even faster this week. The piglet price is the equivalent of €36,30 per piglet. For comparison: last week the quote was €33,60.
