Meat concern Van Loon acquires butcher shop

1 February 2021 - Chanti Oussoren

Meat concern Van Loon Group wants to take over the ProMessa butcher shop in Deventer from Coop Supermarkets. ProMessa produces prepackaged meat products for various supermarket chains in the Netherlands and supplies about 1.500 individual supermarkets.

With the acquisition, Van Loon wants to strengthen its position in the Dutch retail market, the company reports in a statement. Erik van Loon, chairman of the Van Loon Group: "By taking over this company, we can further expand our innovative chain concepts in order to contribute to making the chain more sustainable."

The acquisition amount has not been disclosed. The sale is strategically good for Coop Supermarkets, because it gives the company more financial scope for further investments in the retail chain. According to the statement, ProMessa has experienced "solid growth" in recent years. Under the care of Van Loon, the butcher's shop will have the opportunity 'to develop optimally.'

Employment unchanged
The intended acquisition is subject to approval by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) and advice from the works councils of Coop and Van Loon Group. The takeover has no negative consequences for employment at ProMessa.
