ASF infections are also increasing in Saxony

8 February 2021 - Chanti Oussoren

The African Swine Fever (ASF) in Germany is still spreading. Recently, new infections have been found in the federal state of Brandenburg, but the infection number in Saxony is now also increasing.

The situation surrounding ASF in Germany remains dangerous. The pig population is still free of the virus, but the virus is circulating quickly among wild boars. Wild boars are actively hunted and carcasses are sought. As a result, the number of infection detections is increasing rapidly. The virus turned out to be very active, especially in the state of Brandenburg, and new infections were confirmed at a rapid pace. The situation seemed calm in Saxony, but new carcasses have now also been found there.

Recently, 12 new infections have been confirmed in Saxony. The carcasses came from East Saxony and raise the total number of infections in the state to 31. In Brandenburg the infection number has passed 600 and 610 wild boars with ASF have been discovered to date. The total infection number in Germany thus rises to 641.

Active infection process
The new finds in Saxony are located south of the Oberlausitz military training area in the Niederspreer pond area, a large nature reserve northwest of Neusorge. The area is a natural habitat for wild boars and is difficult to access due to the many ponds and the fact that it is embedded in the moors. Petra Köpping, German Minister of Social Affairs, emphasized on Saturday that the new finds show that there is an active infection process in the threatened area.
