The current demand for piglets is good and the supply is not ample. Demand for piglets from abroad is also increasing, although sales to Germany are still far below the level of previous years. Last year, almost 90.000 Dutch piglets crossed the German border at the end of January, this year the export is more than 20.000 lower.

The good export demand is mainly driven by the import need from Spain, where there is a lot of demand for Dutch piglets this year. Over the first 4 weeks of 2021, more than 40.000 piglets went to Spain almost every week, only in week 2 the export was lower. In week 4, exports to Spain were no less than twice as high as last year.

Now that the winter weather has also struck the Netherlands, logistical problems are lurking. But this is not reflected in this week's piglet price change, which is a significant step up.

The DCA BestPigletPrice increases this week by €1,50 to €31,50 per piglet. Despite the significant increase, the difference with the German quotation is becoming smaller, the VEZG quotation increases this week by €2,50 to €30,50. The Danish quotation also continues to increase and the price rises to €39 per piglet.
