The oversupply of ready-to-slaughter fattening pigs in Germany is decreasing more quickly than previously estimated. Yet many pigs are still hanging above the market. The representative of German pig farmers (ISN) estimates the current oversupply at about 760.000 heads.
At the turn of the year, the oversupply peaked at 1 million pigs, but pig congestion eased in January. ISN thought it possible that the German 'schweinesteau' would stagnate further weekly and could decrease by about 60.000 units per week. Under optimal conditions, even a decrease of 90.000 could be possible. In the meantime, the containment of the oversupply seems to be going twice as fast as was estimated.
In the last week of January, the pig congestion even decreased by 120.000 heads. Over the whole of January, the oversupply stagnated by 300.000 pigs and February started with about 760.000 pigs ready for slaughter hanging above the market.
slaughter capacity
The decrease is due to the optimization of the slaughter capacity at slaughterhouses. As far as is known, many slaughterhouses no longer have large-scale corona infections among staff members. Currently, only the Steinemann slaughterhouse at 2 locations is still struggling with limited slaughter capacity due to the corona crisis.
