Hendrix closes Russian deal in pig genetics

18 February 2021 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

Hendrix Genetics has signed a multi-year agreement with Cherkizovo Group, Russia's largest meat producer. The Russian meat company will use Hendrix's Hypor breeding stock in its breeding program for pig production.

The Dutch breeding group announced this on Thursday (February 18). In a statement, the companies said that the collaboration aims to provide the Russian market with high-quality proteins, improve food safety and increase value for the pig farmer.

Can deliver quickly
According to Hendrix, the local availability of large numbers of gilts responds to the need to quickly supply animals to the newly built farms that are dealing with a health problem in the population. Hendrix will introduce her own BioHypor program there. This is a sow replacement system, which the company says aims to increase supply chain profitability through accelerated distribution of top genes, sharing of detailed data, better biosecurity and comprehensive technical and genetic support.

Cherkizovo Group has purchased 25.000 gilts, Brad Heron, Director of Operations, said in the statement. He sees the choice of Hypor as a 'commitment to the Russian market'. According to him, the Hypor Libra sow meets Cherkizovo's expectations by being able to produce a 20 kg weaned piglet by day 6,2, which can reach the slaughter weight of 135 kg without additional supplements and at low cost.

In the top 3
Cherkizovo Group claims to be in the top 3 in the Russian markets for poultry meat, pork and processed meat products. The Russian group has 9 poultry and 16 pork processing sites, 9 meat processing sites, 9 feed factories and 300.000 hectares of agricultural land. In 2020, the company had a turnover of 128,8 billion rubles (about €1,45 billion).
